The SA Transport and Allied Workers Union will not attend the SA national convention to be held at the weekend, a spokesperson said on Thursday.
The convention, led by disaffected ANC members, will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre with provincial delegates set to arrive and register on Friday. Satawu spokesperson Randall Howard described the convention as a "coalition of the powerless, undemocratic, ill-disciplined and ambitious", who could not accept the outcome of the ANC's Polokwane conference. Howard said Satawu was part of the liberation movement that had struggled for democracy and would continue to defend and enhance it. He said Satawu would mobilise its members not to take part in the convention. Howard said Satawu would work towards ensuring that the ANC retained its two thirds majority in next year's elections.
