A female metro police officer recovered a motor vehicle that was hijacked at Glenvista, south of Johannesburg on Monday, Metro police said.

Inspector Edna Mamonyane said a patrolling officer was stopped by a motorist who had just been hijacked around 8am.

"The officer spotted the car on Bellair Street and chased it. The suspect abandoned the car and opened fire at the officer who returned fire."

Mamonyane said security guards from the area assisted the officer in chasing the alleged hijacker.

"He took off his shirt, left it with the gun and fled. We took the gun and the shirt had blood stains on it; that means the suspect was wounded."

No further injuries were reported.

The alleged hijacker was still at large.
