Two men suspected of undertaking a spate of robberies at the Thokoza cemetery were arrested on Sunday, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

"Our crime task team received information that people visiting their relatives' graves either to remove weeds or for other reasons were normally robbed by thugs operating in the cemetery, particularly on Sunday mornings," Inspector Jimmy Maboko said.

While the officers were keeping watch on Sunday morning, they saw two suspects walking around the cemetery and walked towards them.

"One of the men drew out a firearm, pointing it at the officers but on realising that they were police, he dropped it to the ground," Maboko said.

The men, aged 22 and 29, were then arrested and detained at the Thokoza police holding cells.

They were expected to appear in the Alberton Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing charges of possessing an unlicenced firearm and eight rounds of ammunition.
