The Cape Party's Adrian Kay called for Allan Boesak to step down as Cope's candidate for premier of the Western Cape.
Kay slammed Boesak as a proven fraudster, saying the former apartheid activist was worse than Jacob Zuma in a media statement.
"That Cope should stoop to the level of anointing Boesak as first citizen of the Cape is a disgrace", said Kay.
Kay added that Boesak was no example to the thousands of young people in the Cape. "Boesak has a history of skirting with trouble and putting a convicted fraudster in Leeuwenhof is a troubling revelation about the character of the supposedly squeaky clean Cope"
"Even Jacob Zuma, despite his flaws, has a better record than Boesak. Zuma was found innocent, Boesak was guilty and we don't want him here."
