"The incident occurred on Monday, while the man was asleep at midnight," said spokesperson Dimple Nkosi.

She said the man heard footsteps outside his house, and went to check who was there.

"As he was getting out of bed, two shots were fired through his window... one of the bullets hit him on his leg."

She said the shooter ran away.

"He managed to phone the police who arrived at the scene."

The man was taken to hospital, and was in a stable condition.

The motive behind the shooting was unknown.

No arrests had been made, and police were investigating.
