A Cape traffic official was among four people arrested in Veldrift on Wednesday for the illegal issuing of learner's and driver's licences, said West Coast police.

Superintendent Andre Taut said the licences were issued at a cost of between R1000 and R4000 — without any test being conducted whatsoever.

The 49-year traffic official was arrested at his home in Laaiplek.

A 32-year-old female administrative clerk at the Veldrift municipality was also arrested, as were two men, aged 49 and 42, at their homes in Mitchell's Plain and Hopefield, respectively.

It is believed that the two men acted as agents for the officials and recruited prospective applicants to purchase the licenses.

It was not yet known how many licenses were issued. However, those found to have been illegally obtained would be invalid, said Traut.
