Cape's Town's Muizenburg beach has been closed after a dead whale was recovered floating in waist deep water and attracting sharks.

Craig Lambinin from NSIR believes that a number of sharks have been feeding on the dead whale and there is a strong chance that more sharks will be attracted to the beach.

According to Marine and Coastal Management (MCM), a 10-metre juvenile humpback carcass was found at Surfer's Corner in Muizenburg and it was covered with shark bites.

Shark spotters are on standby and law enforcement authorities are on the scene advising people not to get into the water.

As a precaution, bathers and sea users in other False Bay Coast beaches are urged to exercise caution, Lambinin told iafrica.com.

It is unclear how long the beach will remain closed for.
