The Congress of the People (Cope) has sent a letter to the Public Protector requesting him to probe the latest controversy surrounding the ongoing Travelgate saga.
Cope spokesperson Phillip Dexter said on Monday that the party requested the Public Protector to fulfil its constitutional mandate to protect the public purse and launch an immediate investigation into "abuse of State resources".
This comes after recent media reports stated that the ANC allegedly plans to purchase the loan book of one of the travel agencies allegedly involved in the Travelgate scandal.
The Sunday Times reported on Sunday that Parliament is to pay R370 000 to shut down the Travelgate saga and thereby protect MPs implicated in the scandal from being sued.
Cope said this is a "cynical attempt to protect parliamentarians from being held accountable for these allegations of fraud".
"This is yet another example of ANC corruption and the abuse of tax payers' money in this latest chapter of the Travelgate fiasco," Dexter said.
