Two vagrants sustained third degree burns and five firefighters were injured in a fire on Table Mountain, Cape Town's disaster management services said on Wednesday.

"The fire is still burning, but what has been in our favour is that we've had a moderate wind," said Greg Pillay, head of the disaster risk management centre.

"We did come across two vagrants who sustained third degree burn wounds. They've been hospitalised.

"We've also had five firefighters sustaining minor injuries," he said, adding that their injuries included a fractured finger and sprained ankle.

The fire started around 8pm on Tuesday and firefighters worked through the night to try and contain it.

Pillay said 60 people were evacuated from their homes during the night.

"We've now told them they can return to their homes."

No property had been damaged.

The fire was burning "quite high in the mountains" and disaster management was depending on aerial firefighting support. Two helicopters were currently operational and there was a possibility of the defence force making another two helicopters available.

Pillay said De Waal drive would be closed for the most of the day.
