Fifteen police officers in Bellville, Cape Town are under investigation for murder, the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) said on Thursday.

The 15 were allegedly involved in the murder of Sidwell Mkwambi, whose body was found in a police vehicle parked outside the Tygerberg Forensic Pathology Services office on February 10, said spokesperson Dikeledi Phiri in a statement.

"A post mortem was conducted and it was established that Mkwambi died as a result of multiple blunt trauma to the body.

"The ICD is investigating a case of murder and envisage finalising the matter as soon as it obtains outstanding reports from forensics and conducts one outstanding identity parade."

Phiri added that the ICD was also probing an assault case against the same officers for the alleged beating and torture of a witness who was reportedly with Mkwambi during the attack.

The docket would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions once the investigation was complete.

Thirteen other unrelated dockets, containing allegations of assault and torture, had been taken up by ICD for investigation.
