A 45-year-old teacher was killed when unidentified gunmen shot him three times outside his home, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the teacher from the Lothana Secondary School in Qumbu left his vehicle at the police station on Thursday night as he lived in a very dangerous area.

"He left his vehicle at the police station for safe keeping and walked home.

"It is alleged that two men approached him outside his house and shot him. He died at the scene and the reason for the shooting is unknown," he said.

No arrests had been made and police were investigating a case of murder.
