A man was shot and injured after robbing a Shell garage in Honeydew in Johannesburg on Friday, Gauteng police said.

Captain Lydia Mtila-Dikolomela said two men entered the Shell garage on the corner of Yster street and President Fouche drive in Boskruin at around 5.10am.

They allegedly held the teller at gunpoint and demanded that the register be opened.

The men allegedly took money and ran to their car, a blue Hyundai Elantra.

The car would not start and the men then fled on foot.

Security guards responded and chased the men.

The men shot at the security guards who returned fire and hit one of the men in the leg.

Security guards apprehended the injured man. The other man ran away and was being sought by police.

A case of armed robbery was being investigated, said Mtila-Dikolomela.
