Outgoing Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Sandra Botha is recovering in Johannesburg's Millpark Hospital following successful heart surgery, her husband and fellow MP Andries Botha confirmed on Tuesday.

"The prognosis is good," he told Sapa.

She was admitted to hospital after experiencing chest pains on Sunday and surgeons had placed two stents into two arteries on Monday, he said.

She was expected to be discharged soon, but because it was dangerous to fly too soon after such surgery, the foreign affairs department had agreed she would only take up her new post as South African Ambassador to the Czech Republic in about six to eight weeks' time instead of later this month as scheduled.
