An ANC official who appeared at the Hermanus Magistrate's Court on Wednesday in connection with possession of more than 2400 pieces of abalone was granted R10 000 bail, the SABC reported.

Siphiwo Vincent Kalolo, also an employee of the Overberg District Municipality was arrested while driving a car marked with the party's election stickers, after police were tipped-off.

He allegedly refused to stop his car when police approached him, but they later managed to arrest him.

Kololo has since been suspended from work.

The case was postponed to 18 May.
