Six people, including two policemen, died when a police car crashed into another vehicle in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said a police vehicle, which was taking five police officers home, collided with a Volkswagen Golf on Wednesday around 7.30pm.

Superintendent Sizinzo Mgubelanga (46) died on the scene and Constable Nqabisa Judith Mhleli (32) died later in hospital.

Three occupants in the Volkswagen Golf died on the scene and a fourth died in hospital.

Mgubelanga served in the police for 26 years while Mhleli had served for three years.
