A 10-year-old boy was killed on Thursday after he was hit by a taxi in Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg, ER24 paramedics said.

"It is understood from bystanders on the scene that the little boy suddenly ran across the road and the taxi collided with him," said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

"He suffered major injuries and there was nothing that paramedics could do for him. He was declared dead on the scene," he said.

Vermaak said the taxi was leaving Sebokeng when it hit the boy. The driver of the taxi was questioned by police.

Next of kin had not yet been notified about the boy's death. No family or friends could be found at the scene.
