The road freight industry strike was not over, although the parties had agreed on the monetary issues, the Road Freight Employers' Association (RFEA) said on Tuesday.

"The parties managed to agree on all monetary issues, which include amongst others an across the board increase of 11 percent," the RFEA said on its website on Tuesday afternoon.

The strike by members of the SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) started last Tuesday.

The RFEA said the parties had reached a stalemate over Satawu's demand that all terms of the negotiations should also extend to employees who were not covered by the bargaining council and fell outside of the bargaining unit.

"The unions cannot prove that they represent any of those people that they want us to extend the agreement to," the RFEA said.

"The only outstanding reason for people to continue with the strike is to support this issue."

The RFEA said employees still participating in the strike were doing so not for their own benefit but for the benefit of "other people".

There have been various reports of violence and intimidation by striking road freight sector workers.

The RFEA said that where members had specific proof of intimidation or violence they would be "within their rights to inderdict Satawu on that basis".

Earlier, Satawu general secretary Randall Howard said: "The strike continues. We've had overwhelming support from our members, between 80 and 90 percent are participating."
