South African singer Matthys Roets is paralysed from the navel down after a motorbike accident last week, a hospital spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Rosepark Hospital spokesperson Esmarie Cronje said the injuries to the T11 and T12 vertebrae of Roets' spine resulted in the paralysis.

He remained in the Bloemfontein hospital's neuro-intensive care unit on Tuesday but was taken off sedation, she said.

Roets, who lives in Centurion, reportedly fell off his bike near Dewetsdorp last week after his brakes apparently failed.

He also had lung injuries which were also being monitored.

His family was coping well, she said. His parents and sister were in Bloemfontein with him.
