Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said passengers in a white Toyota Corolla opened fire on another stationary car at around 8.30pm on Wednesday.
"The victims, who were all together, some seated in their motor vehicle and others standing around the vehicle, were struck by the gunfire, resulting in three fatally wounded, and four seriously wounded," he said. Budhram said the wounded were taken to nearby hospitals. The deceased were identified as Velaphi Benye (30) Gugu Mvelase (25) and Celokuhle Sokhela (30). The injured were: Sakhiseni Xaba (39) Siyabonga Gasa (39) Zamane Langa (33) and Salani Sohhela (40).
Budhram said several AK-47, R1, R4 and R5 cartridges were found on the scene.
He said the motive for the attack was unknown at this stage and no arrests had been made.
