A German woman was assaulted with a rubber hammer and strangled in a security complex in Pretoria, Beeld newspaper reported on Friday.

The 28-year-old woman was a Grade 2 teacher at the Deutsche Schule Pretoria and had only been in South Africa for a year.

Police later in the day arrested a man, believed to be her ex-boyfriend, in Parys in the Free State.

"She did not arrive for work, so a colleague went to look for her at her house," police spokesman Inspector Michael Mbewe said.

She lived in the Equestria Estate security complex in the eastern parts of Pretoria.

"The colleague saw blood in the house through a window and called the police," said Mbewe.

"The teacher had been strangled with a rope and repeatedly hit with a rubber hammer... it was not a pretty sight."

Mbewe said police suspected that her attacker knew her because there had been no signs of forced entry.
