Security has been beefed up in some areas of KwaZulu-Natal, IEC chairperson Brigalia Bam said on Friday.

"The police will be deployed in key areas... to protect voters and observers," she told international observers in Pretoria.

The briefing also touched on the role of the media and the Electoral Act.

She said planning for the elections had not been easy, especially given the Constitutional Court's having to decide on the rights of South Africans living overseas to vote.
