Large parts of Port Elizabeth are without electricity after a 132kV tower outside a substation collapsed, the Nelson Mandela municipality said on Friday afternoon.

It appeared steel thieves had "compromised the stability of the structure", the municipality said in a statement.

The collapse affected the suburbs of Rowallanpark, Chelsea, Lorraine, Arlington, Summerstrand and Walmer.

It was hoped supply would be restored by 6.00am Saturday.
