Two men appeared in the East London Magistrate's Court on Friday for the 2007 murder of Detective Inspector Luyanda Mayekiso, Eastern Cape police said.

Superintendent Mtati Tana said the two men were arrested in Mdantsane on Monday and Thursday respectively.

"I trust that this will send out a strong message that police killers will be hunted down relentlessly and brought to book," he said.

He declined to name the two men, saying they were due for an identity parade.

"We don't want to jeopardise that and naming them would do just that," Tana said.

Mayekiso, 51, was gunned down and robbed of his firearm in Ducats township near East London on 19 October 2009.

His body was found on a street near the N6 with two shot wounds to the head, Tana said.

The two men are expected back in court on Tuesday.
