Forty people were arrested for various crimes in the Booysens area in Johannesburg during overnight operations, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

Inspector Lorraine van Emmerik said the arrests were made between Saturday and Sunday morning for crimes ranging from armed robbery to drinking in public.

Three people were arrested for armed robbery, two for indecent assault, two were arrested for assault with the intent to do bodily harm and one person was arrested for attempted murder.

Seven people were arrested for drunken driving and driving a motor vehicle without a licence, Van Emmerik said.

Those arrested would appear before the Booysens Magistrate's Court on Monday.
