As the ANC aims for a "decisive victory" in the 2009 election, it should remember this victory was to eradicate poverty, former president Nelson Mandela said on Sunday.
"As we try to secure a decisive victory in the upcoming elections we must remember it is to eradicate poverty and ensure a better life for all," said Mandela, who was at the stadium but spoke via a pre-recorded message.
"The ANC has a historic responsibility to lead our organisation and build a united, non-racial society," Mandela said to thunderous applause.
'We are winning'His message was played ahead of an address by African National Congress president Jacob Zuma at the final ANC rally ahead of the 22 April polls.
President Kgalema Motlanthe was at the rally, at the packed Coca-Cola Park stadium with supporters spilling over into the adjoining Johannesburg Stadium.
Former president Thabo Mbeki was not seen at the event.
