The African National Congress will on Thursday host an election party to thank South Africans for casting their votes in the fourth democratic elections, it said.

"As part of celebrating ANC's performance, the organisation will this afternoon host an election party in the area of the Library Gardens in Johannesburg."

Motorists were advised that there would be official road closures from 1pm.

Sauer Street will be closed between Commissioner and Jeppe streets and President Street will also closed between Ntemi Piliso and Harrison streets.

According to partial results from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) centre in Pretoria, the ANC was in a commanding lead by 8.30am with 2 078 352 votes, followed by the Democratic Alliance at 636 637 votes and the Congress of the People in third place with 251 200 votes.
