A man has been arrested in connection with the killing of an ANC supporter and the attempted murder of six others in Swayimani near Pietermaritzburg, police said on Tuesday.

Director Phindile Radebe said the man was taken into police custody after Monday's incident.

She was unable to confirm a report that the suspect was an Inkatha Freedom Party member.

"At this stage, we don't know which political party he is from."

On Monday, a 20-year-old man was shot dead during an ambush at an African National Congress celebration.

Six others were also wounded and were reportedly recovering in hospital.

Initially, it was thought that seven people were injured.

KwaZulu-Natal safety MEC Bheki Cele was expected to visit the victims on Tuesday.
