A second man has been arrested in connection with the killing of an ANC supporter and the attempted murder of six others in Swayimani near Pietermaritzburg, police said on Tuesday.

The first man was arrested just a few hours after the attack on Monday afternoon.

Director Phindile Radebe said a second man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the attack on an African National Congress motorcade.

"The suspect was found in possession of a firearm. Another suspect was also arrested and will be charged for being in illegal possession of a firearm. Both firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to establish if they were used in the attack," she said.

Radebe was unable to confirm a report that the men were Inkatha Freedom Party members.

"At this stage, we don't know which political party he is from," she said of the first man arrested.

On Monday, a 20-year-old man was shot dead during an ambush at an ANC election celebration.

Six others were also wounded and were reportedly recovering in hospital.

Initially, it was thought that seven people were injured.

KwaZulu-Natal safety MEC Bheki Cele was expected to visit the victims on Tuesday.
