The bail application for five men arrested in connection with an attack on an ANC motorcade was postponed in the Camperdown Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The bail application was postponed to 13 May and the accused would remain in custody, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Director Phindile Radebe said.

Simisele Hlongwane was shot dead and seven other African National Congress supporters were injured when their cars were attacked during an election victory celebration in Swayimani outside Pietermaritzburg on 27 April.

"Seven people were arrested in connection with the attack. One of them has been released and the other one briefly appeared in court last week and his bail application will also take place on 13 May,? said Radebe.

ANC supporters protested against the granting of bail outside the court on Monday.

?The ANC does not believe that these suspects deserve bail as they are enemies of democracy,? said ANC provincial spokesperson Nomfundo Mcetywa.
