A police captain was wounded in a shootout with robbers in Springs on Monday, Gauteng police said.
Captain Julia Claasen said a flying squad crew and the captain were looking for a silver Nissan Navara around 12.20pm on Monday.
The police were inside a marked Volkswagen Golf 5 when they spotted the vehicle in Paul Kruger street in Springs and started to follow it.
A shootout between the men inside the Nissan and police ensued on the premises of the Far East Rand hospital. During the shootout the captain was wounded. The robbers took his service pistol and fled in the marked police car.
The police vehicle was found abandoned close to the scene but the pistol was not recovered.
Police appealed to anyone with information on the incident to contact CrimeStop on 08600-10111 or to send an SMS to 32211 (Primedia's Crime Line), Claasen said.
