A 40-year-old East London man sought by police for rape was killed in a mob justice attack at the Fort Grey informal settlement, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Community members descended on the man on Monday night after he allegedly confronted a member of the community policing forum, accusing her of informing police of his whereabouts.

"He confronted the person at 9pm, saying she told police where he was as he was sought for rape. The community then took the law into their own hands by assaulting him to death," said Superintendent Mtati Tana.

When police arrived at the informal settlement, the man, who had serious body and head injuries, was already dead.

No one has been arrested for the man's murder and a case of murder is being investigated.

"We urge communities to report crime to the police and refrain from taking the law into their own hands," Tana said.
