The Western Cape ANC has dismissed claims by incoming premier Helen Zille that it is seeking to make the province ungovernable.

Her claim was a thinly-veiled attempt to deflect attention from poor service delivery by the City of Cape Town, the party said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The truth is, as an old journalist, Zille knows better than to let the truth get in the way of a good story."

"The challenge for Zille is not to carp, not to whinge, not to fly false flags, but to govern," it said.

"Instead of building conspiracies and acting on the whispers of misinformed sources Zille should pay attention to service delivery in poor areas."

Zille was quoted in Tuesday's Cape Argus as saying she had been told "categorically" that the ANC was planning to make the province ungovernable in the wake of last month's DA poll victory.

The ANC statement said Western Cape ANC officials were not aware of any decision to make the province ungovernable. Nor would the ANC back protests calling for the removal of an ANC councillor.

The people of Khayelitsha had every right to express dissatisfaction with poor service delivery, but should remain within the law.

Residents of Khayelitsha's Site C have over the past few days burned tyres and rubbish in the streets, stoned buses and dug trenches across roads, ostensibly to press demands for better services.
