Political parties would be fined for each election poster found in Johannesburg, metro police said on Tuesday.

Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said metro police would start confiscating posters found in the city on Wednesday.

"In terms of section 28 (3) of the Outdoor Advertising by-laws a fine of R200 will be charged per poster and political parties will directly be held liable for the payment of the fine," Minnaar said.

Parties were given 14 days to take down the posters following the elections on 22 April.

Parties had until midnight on Tuesday to remove the posters or face a fine, Minnaar said.
