Police will continue to arrest adults using children to beg around Durban's city streets, the eThekwini Municipality said on Friday.

"The municipality will continue to arrest adults who put the well-being of children at risk," deputy city safety and security manager Bheki Mkhize said.

"Children will be removed from the care of such exploitative adults, which is in line with the Children's Act," he said.

eThekwini's Safer Cities Unit head Martin Xaba, appealed to motorists to stop supporting beggars at intersections, "particularly those who use children to tug at the public's heart-strings".

"By giving in to mothers and adults who exploit children by using them to beg, motorists are making the problem worse," he said.

He said some adults "borrow or rent" children from other parents to use them for begging.

He encouraged residents to rather donate to non-government organisation and places of safety.
