Traffic officers at the Rustenburg municipality in North West are on strike, the SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) said on Friday.

Samwu chairperson Bard Mtyotywa said traffic officers had refused to work since Tuesday.

They were calling for the municipality to provide them with roadworthy cars.

"Only three cars out of 27 are roadworthy," he said.

He said it would be unfair for traffic officers to issue traffic fines to motorists driving cars that were not roadworthy, while the officers drive unroadworthy cars.

"The cars have been parked, officers will not go to the streets until the cars have been attended to."

Municipal spokesperson Butler Matlapeng said traffic officers parked the vehicles on Tuesday, citing unroadworthiness.

The municipality then commissioned testing of all the vehicles. This revealed that 24 of the 27 vehicles were roadworthy. Only three were unroadworthy, he said.

"An additional independent vehicle testing service provider was also brought in. Their findings reflect that one car out of 27 was not roadworthy," he said.

He said traffic flow in the city had not been affected by the strike.
