Former Springbok captain Corne Krige's brother-in-law drove over and killed both his children in a freak accident, Beeld newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The children, Phillip, one, and Kirsten, four, were driving with their father, Jan-Hendrik, on their farm, Elandsfontein in Victoria-West in the Western Cape when the accident happened on Monday afternoon.

"They were driving on a gravel road on the farm and there was a turn to the left. It seems that one of the children opened a car door," said police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Plaatjie.

Both children fell out of the four-wheel drive vehicle and landed underneath the car.

They were the children of Krige's wife's sister.
