A 69-year-old woman was bludgeoned to death at a pawn shop in Vanderbijlpark on Tuesday night, paramedics said.

"It is alleged that the lady was beaten with a hammer," ER24 spokesperson Tristan Wadeley said.

He said the incident happened just after 6.30pm. The woman, who was believed to be the owner of the shop, was declared dead on the scene, having sustained major head trauma.

A police investigation into the incident was underway, said Wadeley.

Meanwhile on Monday night, a domestic worker, aged 51, was beaten to death, apparently with golf clubs.

The murder took place at a home in Kempton Park. Police are following up on the incident.
