The SA Council of Churches (SACC) on Wednesday said it was praying for the new government to be guided by wisdom and compassion so it might work against disunity during its term of office.

SACC general secretary Eddie Makue said South Africans were looking for a government whose economic and fiscal policies would shield them and minimise the negative impact of the global economic crunch.

He congratulated President Jacob Zuma and the African National Congress on their election victory, but warned that the SACC, as part of its prophetic calling, had a duty before God and humanity to hold the government accountable where necessary.

"For that reason, we shall not refrain from criticising government when and where necessary," Makue said in a statement.

He also stressed the SACC would co-operate with government.

"We will co-operate with government in all matters that serve our common good as citizens and as human beings."
