About 100 newly elected members of Parliament have been evacuated from their hotel in Cape Town following a bomb scare on Friday, the SABC reported.

"There was a call that was received [by the hotel] at 6.10am saying they must evacuate," said Captain Bernadine Steyn.

She said they evacuated the hotel, the Holiday Inn Express on Church street, "as a precaution" and sent in sniffer dogs.

"Nothing was found," said Steyn.

A duty manager, who declined to give her name, at the Holiday Inn denied there had been a telephoned threat.

She said the alarm that roused guests at 6am was a planned fire drill.

"As you know, these things can happen at any time," she said.
