A Road Traffic Inspectorate officer was seriously injured after being hit by a speeding vehicle near the Mtunzini Toll Plaza on the N2, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The officer was part of a team conducting a speed trap and was struck when she attempted to flag down a car which did not stop, said RTI spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu.

The car had been caught speeding at 146km per hour. Although it had slowed when it reached the toll plaza, it still struck the RTI officer.

"The vehicle was not going very fast. We suspect the brakes [failed] because we checked the system and the car had been found to be unroadworthy," said Mngomezulu.

After receiving treatment, the officer was airlifted by helicopter to Umhlanga hospital in Durban, said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha.

"[These are] always difficult cases to deal with as these are colleagues and friends that we work hand-in-hand with on a daily basis," said Botha.
