A cash-in-transit heist in Meadowlands, Soweto was foiled on Friday morning while it was in progress, Gauteng police said.

"[Police] got information that there was a robbery that was going to take place at Meadow Point shopping centre," said Captain Lindiwe Mbatha.

When police arrived at the shopping centre at 8.30am they found a gang of men, armed with rifles, attempting to break through the glass of a SBV armoured van.

A shoot-out between police and the heist gang ensued. The men then fled and police caught one of the robbers.

Mbatha said no police or bystanders were injured.

Police were questioning the arrested man.
