ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the boy was found lying in Sparks road, Overport, in severe pain, with possible neck and head injuries which necessitated the use of advanced life support.
Banks suggested the accident could have been avoided if the child had used a nearby pedestrian crossing.
"More and more pedestrians are been knocked down because they are taking chances by running across busy freeways or roads and [not] taking the extra few minutes to use the necessary walkways that have been built to get across the roads," he observed.
Once stabilised, the child was taken to hospital for further treatment.
