A traffic officer was shot and killed in Kraaifontein in Cape Town on Friday after he stopped a bakkie, police said.

Inspector Erica Crous said the officer stopped a white Ford Bantam bakkie on Bottelary Road around 1pm.

"A shot was fired fatally wounding the 35-year-old traffic officer from the Stellenbosch traffic department.

Four men then fled in the bakkie in the direction of Stellenbosch. The vehicle was later recovered in Khayamandi.

No arrests have been made and the murder investigation continues.
