Two SA Social Security Agency (SASSA) members appeared in separate Limpopo courts on Friday for allegedly defrauding the agency of more than R100 000, police said.

Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said 39-year-old Joel Makwela was arrested at the Mookgopong SASSA department after he allegedly defrauded it of R76 610 between 2004 and 2008.

"Makwela was claiming disability and child support grants for his wife and a child, although his wife is not disabled."

Makwela and his wife, Francina (36) appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on charges of fraud.

Ramatseba said the two were released on bail. Makwela was granted R1000 bail and the his wife R500. The case was postponed to 21 June.

Another SASSA official appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate's Court on Friday after he allegedly defrauded the agency of R26 000.

Ramatseba said Takalani Makhado allegedly registered his two children for child-support grants although they did not qualify.

He was also released on R1000 bail and the case was postponed to 19 June.
