A former soccer star was being sought by police following the murder of a 27-year-old man in Dobsonville, Soweto police said on Monday.

"The soccer star is alleged to have stabbed the man in the chest at around 1pm on Sunday and then drove him to Leratong hospital where he later died," said Inspector Kay Makhubela.

After dropping the man at the hospital, the former player for a Premier Soccer League team known to Sapa is alleged to have left, not knowing that his alleged victim would die moments later.

Police were now investigating a case of murder.

"The man is known to the deceased's family and we expect to make an arrest soon," he said.
