A Free State police constable was expected to appear in the Koppies Magistrate's Court on Monday for accidentally killing his colleague while cleaning his service pistol, a spokesman said.

The 31-year-old man was allegedly cleaning his pistol on Saturday morning when a shot went off, killing his 29-year-old colleague instantly, said Captain Rulene Kuhn.

"The two men were seated in a car in Parys when a shot went off and killed Constable Ntima Seisa," she said.

The officer was then arrested and charged with murder.

Both men were stationed at the Parys police station.
