A 40-year-old woman accused of killing her two children was remanded in custody by the East London Magistrate's Court on Monday, the SABC reported.

Wendy Manthe appeared only briefly and was referred to Cecilia Makiwane hospital for mental observation. The case has been postponed until 1 June.

Manthe was arrested on Saturday for allegedly strangling her children with rope. The children, aged seven and nine, were found with their mother near Kidd's Beach outside East London.

Manthe was found with her wrists slashed.

The Daily Dispatch reported on Monday that Manthe's co-workers said she was worried about a pending court case for fraud and that if she went to prison, there would be no one to care for her children.
