Five people, including two children, died after a head-on collision between a truck and a bus in Hammersdale, KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday morning, emergency services said.

"Fire and the provincial ambulance services raced to the scene of a horrific accident on the Mpumalanga road in Hammersdale where a truck and a bus had collided head-on," said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha.

Two people were critically injured and another was in a serious condition in hospital.

"Five people lost their lives due to the severity of their injuries and paramedics and firemen battled for more than an hour to cut them free from the accident.

"Two of the tragic deaths were children aged around 13 years," said Botha.
