An 18-year-old youth drowned at Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth after swimming while apparently under the influence of alcohol, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

"The man was with friends at a nearby casino on Monday night. He allegedly consumed a huge amount of alcohol and insisted on going to the seaside for a swim," Inspector Alwin Labans said.

"His friends did not want to accompany him to the beach, so he went by himself.

"After a few hours, his friends decided to go look for him, but could not find him anywhere. Search and rescue teams were then called."

The man's body was found washed up on another beach a few kilometres away early on Tuesday morning.

Police were investigating, Labans said.
