Five armed men shot and seriously wounded commuters at a railway station in KwaMashu, north of Durban on Tuesday, police said.

"At around 4.30am, a group of five men went to a railway station and started shooting at the commuters.

"Three security guards and a woman who were waiting for their train were seriously wounded," said Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu.

Canisters from a 9mm pistol were found on the scene and nothing was stolen from the victims, Mngomezulu said.

"We still don't know the motive for the shooting. We are investigating a case of attempted murder," he said.
